Sustainability Summer Finale

Last Wednesday we enjoyed a great evening at the CCYC to celebrate the close of our Sustainability Summer campaign.

The summer started with Sustainability June – we had three great businesses that were featured throughout the month, all of which have sustainability at the heart of their business. We had hoped to hold our finale at the end of June; however, the various restrictions gave us a great excuse to extend the campaign throughout the whole summer, raising even more awareness of the amazing things local Cowes businesses are doing!

On the evening we had a brilliant panel of businesses, including a couple of our featured businesses: Eco Street & Eat Street, and My Funky Bags. Joining them were People Powered, complete with cargo bike. We were delighted to also have Arc Consulting on the panel.

Eco Street (Laurel & Alex) talked about their business consultancy service, in which they work with companies who would like to be more sustainable and offering advice and alternatives. Eco Street even offer a free week’s trial of their zero-waste commercial cleaning products. If you weren’t there and would like to arrange a free trial, get in contact with our membership team who will pass on your details – membership@cowesbusiness.org.uk

Molly, of My Funky Bags, talked about her recent sponsorship of Olly Rush’s challenge, and record-breaking swim around the Island to save the seas of plastic pollution. This cause is extremely close to My Funky Bag’s heart, as all their bags are made from recycled plastic – bottles or packing tape! Molly shared with us that they’ve even started stocking rubber flip flops that, at the end of their use can be buried in the garden!

The People Powered representative, Matt, was seen showing off his cargo bike cycling skills – we suspect it’s not as easy as it looks! He explained how the business started, only a mere three months ago, by securing bid funding from the local council. For anyone who hasn’t heard of them, People Powered are offering local deliveries using their fleet of cargo bikes, reducing carbon emissions, and also providing a fun innovative delivery service! If you’d like to arrange a delivery or discuss in more detail, please contact our membership team who will pass on your details – membership@cowesbusiness.org.uk

We had some brilliant questions from the attendees for our panellists, and it was clear everyone there was interested in sustainability and being more sustainable. To host an evening where so many people shared a vested interest was brilliant and it was lovely to hear of the amazing things other businesses are doing around the town.

Gavin, our chairman also shared the exciting news about the TEDx Cowes event in November, and we were lucky to be joined on the evening by Leonardo, the organiser! The subject for the event is Ocean Sustainability – to find out more info and register your business to attend, present, sponsor or exhibit, visit their website – https://www.tedxcowes.com/

We’re already looking forward to the next Cowes Business Association event, it’s so great being able to meet in person and hear from the huge range of businesses within Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard.
